Post Heriglide Down...

Funny thing happened on the way to....
Did the ride down to and back from Bello, bike was running nice and pulling hard when required.
Last Satdee, I had arranged to get her serviced and do an adjustment to the new clutch.  Fired her up and as I was wearing an open face, heard the motor sounding a tad different.  She fired up easy, warmed up and headed off.   Had an ear tucked down the side of the bike listening for the sound and it sounded like a lazy or stuffed Lifter.

Anyhoo, get to the spannerman, tell him the perceived problem, he has a listen and agrees.  So, let her cool down, pull out the pushrods, remove the lifters and they seem to be ok.  Leave the bike there for pickup later in the week as he doesn't have any lifters to replace but doesn't want to  put the old ones back in just in case.   Long story short, get a text yesterday with some photo's of the pistons.  Bit of scoring around the sides so not good so give him the ok to find the source of the issue.  Get a call a couple of hours later, bloody crank bearing had failed.   Pulled an early mark, get out to the spannerman for a chat and a looksee at the carcase.  One man's catastrophe is another man's opportunity.

So, motor is being rebuilt with new crank bearings, .10 high comp pistons, slightly decked heads and port and polish.  Already running an EV3 cam with a Thunderslide kit in the CV and a Screaming Eagle ignition system.  These mods together with the Kerker/Supertrapp dual exhaust should make the fat lady sing.  Pull try to get some photo's as we go as this may well be the last build I do.

Yes mate.  From the look of the pistons and inside the barrels, it had only just started.  We had stopped at Woodburn for refuel and she was running fine then so shit happened in the last 200klms.  When she is back on the road, I will know she will be reliable and hot to trot.

Sounds like the perfect rebuild, something that will sit up and fart when you ask
it to, while retaining most of your cruising capabilities at legal speeds, that's about
10-20 over the limit for us    .

Hi Rick.  Yep she was a low milage bike.  We figure she spent a huge amount of time on the sidestand when she was in Arizona (desert bike).  This may have caused the bearing to become very dry and allow the hardening to lift.  Not too concerned as she was always going to be a keeper and this way, I know exactly what she will do.  Best result really as I picked it up close to home and not on a run.

Well Bill, look at it this way, you had a great excuse to build up a hotrod motor

Should pull pretty hard now, I'll have to watch out!!

You'll be EZI to pick coming towards us, you'll be the one with the big grin on your face

Really enjoying having the old softy out and about, she is going well aside from a few little issues that will be resolved over time.  Missing the fat girl though, big hole in the garage.  When I get her back and have the motor settled, thinking a nice overnighter down to West Wylong or Dubbo or thereabouts.

Yep, a solid run but definitely doable.  Figured you to be a starter mate.  Once I get the old girl back, will formulate an Overnighter.
