Post What Treasures Do You Have In Your Shed

Being a Harley Davidson forum where we all own , ride and love our Harley's that much
that it is more a lifestyle to us all , we don't jump on our Harley's on Saturday morning ,
after giving it a quick polish up on Friday night , and parking them on Sunday afternoon
for a week of hibernation , no sir that's not what Harley Davidson riders are all about we
live , breath and ride them at every opportunity we get and the rides section in our forum
confirms this .

Harley riders being as they are also need a hobby to keep them happy and for a lot of us
that hobby is reliving our youth and having a second or third bike just for the hell of it and
these bikes are usually bikes that we first owned and started our riding career on , so the
BOM team have been working tirelessly on a way of presenting to the forum our members
second bike , and we have titled it " What Treasures Do You Have In Your Shed "

This thread is to allow members to declare boastfully of their other avocations . Tell your
story on how your interest was first drawn to it, how long you've waited & the steps taken
to achieve your "other" passion, include a few (or a lot .. ) of photos about whatever else
lives in your garage .

So we hope you's all enjoy our first presentation in this thread and it is Wozza's restored
1957 B.S.A. Golden Flash .

Here is the story of Wozza’s 1957 BSA Golden Flash A10 Re-Build ..

  dscn1150_1000_x_750_1384141453_544931 dscn1122_1320_x_990

I’d been looking for a retirement project bike to build in my shed for a while; I spotted this bike on eBay about 2 years ago.
I remembered about 45 years ago riding in a mate’s father’s side-car being pulled by a BSA A10 & the beautiful note of the
exhaust crackling in my ears, & thought yep this is the bike for me…

I purchased the bike & bought it home in pieces in the back of my ute

 1_1384137209_766262  4  2_1384142349_498966

Fortunately I had a repair & parts manuals, I also joined a BSA forum on the net to obtain information.

The motor was in bad condition & required a total rebuild, the engine build date 30/5/57.

 5_1384137453_979415

The gearbox was also in bits, but at least it was all there, I had to replace the damaged lay shaft, bushes & main bearing to
get it operational.

 8

I stripped the bike to the frame & had everything bead blasted than repainted it myself, replaced the steering head bearings
& rebuilt the forks with new springs bushes & seals.

 9  10  11_1384137890_347984

In 1956 & 57 BSA released the Golden Flash with 7” full hub alloy Ariel wheels, which look great polished up, soooo… after new
bearings, Stainless steel rims & spokes…

 12  13_1384138242_620920  14  14b

Stripping the motor I discovered the head was buggered (cracks in the exhaust seats going through to the inlets) so I picked up
a A7 head from a mate for a slab of beer.

 15

I had it ported & polished, also new valves, seats, guides & springs.

 16  16b

I split the cases & had them bead blasted. Then got the crank reground -.010 thou, removed the sludge trap plugs & gave the oil
ways a good clean out. Polished & balanced the conrods, bores honed +.020” though & new +.020”thou over flat top pistons, new
timing side bush & drive side bearing & seal. I also replaced the 354 cam with a 356 & Carb overhauled to give her a bit of up & go.

 18  18a  18b  18bb  18c  17  19  dscn0093_1000_x_750_1384141285_430516

Reassembling the motor with all new seals, a SRM high volume oil pump & aligning the timing marks.

 19b

Next came the electrics, the old Generator had the timing side seal replaced at some stage with some type of HIDE…

 23

I had the Genny rebuilt Neg to Earth & balanced rewound to 12Volt by a mate in N.S.W.

 24

Then replaced the old LUCAS 6 Volt regulator with a new & much smaller & reliable DVR2 regulator from England.

 24a  24b

I replaced the clutch plates, both bearing races, the primary chain & gearbox drive sprocket.
These 6 spring clutches are shit & I hope to pick up a 4 spring one soon.

 25

I am still looking for the correct fuel tank which has chrome sides, I had her running & went for a short ride last week .. DAM…..
she sounds just as good as I remember 45 years ago…

 25  26_1384140439_983087  27  28

And now the 1957 B.S.A. Golden Flash sits proudly next to my Harley

 29

And now I am off for a ride

 dscn1121_1320_x_990_1384141622_360186

Cheers… WozzA

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

that's a great job you have done wozza , the bike looks excellent.
I only have one bike in the shed at the moment , but in the past have rebuilt a Suzuki katana from scratch and a 74 z900 aswell with my older brother , it's a great feeling when ya get to start them up for the first time and head off down the road. Planning to rebuild my roadie from scratch once I can put another bike in the stable to ride first . hopefully pass it on to my boys one day.

About 2 years...  a lot of the time was spent searching the net & waiting for parts to arrive from England ...

Only because I'm a tight arse, & refused to pay over the top Dollar for parts from a specialist British bike shop in Melb..

& being a old pommy bike I guess it rates as a STILL ongoing restro...

& to tell ya the truth I wasn't worried how long it took...  ( it got me out of the house  )

2 years .. that's pretty good considering the age .. I would've expected several more years. Once again WELL DONE .. ya brought a old beautiful bike back to rumble again ..

G'day musashi mate.... I'd be interested if he has one for sale...
It's a 4 Gallon tank with the 3" ROUND dimples for the badges, & screw holes for the knee rubbers..  for a 1957 model A10 ...
( I would'nt knock back a 4" round dimples tank either...  )

see how ya go, thanks....  Cheers WozzA

My 'Treasures':

I scored the 1961 Beemer from a shed in Lismore and the sidecar from a Museum but I'm no further along in the project than when I bought em.
I've bought a manual and few bits off eBay but no real work as such.
